At least four Pakistani players, including their captain and leading bowler, were acting to the orders of a “fixer”, it is claimed. By carrying out the most subtle of deceptions – such as an occasional no-ball – they were allegedly making themselves, the fixer and betting syndicates hundreds of thousands of pounds.
In a News of the World sting, reporter Mazher Mahmood allegedly bought his way into the match-fixing ring by posing as a businessman from the Far East.
He allegedly paid £150,000 to the man at the centre of the scandal, Mazhar Majeed, and in return was told exactly what would happen during the following day’s play.
Mr Majeed was last night being questioned by detectives.
Meanwhile, at Lord’s yesterday, where England completed the formality of a victory, the players, officials and commentators were left reeling by the accusations – and angry fans were demanding their money back.
Michael Vaughan, the former England captain and Daily Telegraph columnist, said it was a “terrible” day for cricket and repeated his recent claim that corruption was rife. “People did not believe me. But this story only confirms what we have been hearing for years.”
A tip-off led to the newspaper’s reporters arranging a series of meetings with Mr Majeed.
He boasted of his role as agent and “manager” of 10 players, and said he worked “very closely” with the Pakistan Cricket Board. He allegedly said seven players were part of the racket. “I’ve been doing it with them, the Pakistani team, for about two and a half years. And we’ve made masses and masses of money,” he reportedly said.
Mr Majeed went on to explain the mechanics of the alleged fraud, which takes advantage of the intricate “spot” betting systems that allow punters to place wagers on the smallest occurrences. The agent asked for £10,000 to arrange two no-balls to be bowled at a specific point during the Test at the Oval. However the alleged arrangement was cancelled.
Last Wednesday, the day before the Lord’s match started, a further £140,000 was apparently given to Mr Majeed. Pictures appear to show him counting the bundles of £50 notes in a hotel room.
The newspaper said that he told them exactly when Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif would deliberately bowl three no-balls by overstepping the crease.
He allegedly said: “I’m telling you, if you play this right you’re going to make a lot of money.”
Mr Majeed is then claimed to have telephoned Amir, 18, one of the sport’s brightest emerging talents who was named Pakistan’s man of the series, to prove to the reporter he was “onside”. On Thursday morning, as forecast, on the first ball of the third over, Amir overstepped by more than a foot.
Without knowing the significance, Sir Ian Botham, who was commentating on the match, said: “You don’t see that too often.” Seven overs later, Asif no-balled on the last ball of the 10th over.
After play was abandoned for the day due to rain, Mr Majeed said he was in text contact with the bowlers and the captain, Salman Butt.
On Friday, despite Amir taking three England wickets for no runs in nine balls he seemingly obeyed the third order from the fixer.
After chatting with Butt, the 18-year-old ran in and delivered another no-ball. On Saturday night Scotland Yard was handed the dossier containing the evidence.
The police investigation will look at further claims from Mr Majeed, who allegedly said he launders his dirty money through a football club he owns in south London, and that he had set up Swiss and British bank accounts for the players. A wider inquiry by the cricket anti-corruption unit is likely to study further apparent boasts by Mr Majeed that corrupt players were not only helping to organise small “spot” bets on no-balls, but could fix an entire match – especially one-day and Twenty20 internationals – for about £1? million.
He suggested that a Test against Australia last January, where Pakistan lost from a seemingly unbeatable position, was rigged by an Indian syndicate paying £830,000.
In the coming months, investigators will determine whether the no-ball scandal was a one-off, or if, as the game’s top names conceded yesterday, it appears cricket is riddled to its core by corruption
